I love collecting people’s stories.  For years, I’ve been fascinated by the stories of how individuals create the life of their dreams: How early in life did they know they had this dream?  What kinds of resistance and doubt did they encounter from others?  How did they keep believing in themselves and their dream, through the (inevitable) tough times?

Today I read an article on canoe.ca about the youngest Canadian to climb Everest, 26-year-old Jean Francois Carrey.  For his advice on how to reach your big dream, read on…

Based on excerpts from the article by Dave Dale, Carrey says:

1) “The most important thing in life, in business, is passion”

2) One of the first steps toward achieving success is telling as many people as possible about your dream. "Everybody around you will help you achieve your goal."

3) When his dream seemed impossible, a friend shared with him this nugget: "Eating a whole elephant is impossible," his friend said, but you can do it by "eating one piece at a time."

4) “You have to start small.” His first job as a river run guide near Renfrew carried him to the Northwest Territories and some of the biggest rivers in the country. After proving himself on the 500-kilometre-long Nahanni River, with the Virginia waterfall twice as deep as Niagara, he realized his youth wasn't a deterrent.

5) You need to "visualize your goals". He travelled to Nepal to see the mountain "with my own eyes." The trip proved to be the "most influential thing" during his long journey and he advised people to get as close to their goals as possible, to inspire them to keep trying.

I really believe you have what it takes to fulfill any dream you have in your heart.  I’ve certainly experienced that in my life – I started flamenco lessons at age 31, and now, five years later, have performed for celebrities and other high profile clients, and dance in some of the most beautiful resorts and villas in the world.  It all started with a dream, a “crazy” idea I held in my heart.  It turned out to be not so crazy, after all.

You can do it – take the first step, today, to climbing your personal Everest!

I’d love to hear from you – what dreams have you accomplished, and which dreams are you gathering the courage for, now?
