Hello from Los Cabos, Mexico – I’m here to do a flamenco show and also to pick up our adopted “rescue” dog, Faro (if you’d like to adopt your own, check out www.humanesocietycabo.com ). I’ve spoken on the radio several times this week about the gifts that can be found in crisis, and how this financial situation, though terrifying for many, actually helps us place more value and focus on the things that count most,. Thankfully, these things that are most important we can always count on, or create, in our lives – things like love, friendship, family, and spiritual faith. After years of negativity I'm now a relentless optimist. Thank goodness, because studies show that optimism results in better physical health and life success, no matter what’s going on around you. You can learn to be more optimistic; read my article about optimism by clicking here. Anyway, this morning I got an email from a friend forwarding me Robin Sharma’s newsletter, titled “Develop a lust for crisis”. I thought you might find it interesting and uplifting. Sharma writes: I get that this title is somewhat controversial but there is a point I'm trying to suggest: really challenging times present really big opportunities. Too many people in business (and within life) duck their heads in the sand when challenges heat up. And yet Carnegie made his fortune in one of the roughest economic climates in history. Hewlett Packard was launched amidst a depression. Many of history's greatest human beings met their defining moments when those around them waved their white flags in surrender. Tough times make great leaders. And wiser human beings. I'll share with you that I have grown the most from my most painful experiences. It was in moments of crisis that I was introduced to my strength, that I raised my standards and that I shifted from coasting through life to reaching for my highest mountaintop. These moments of economic, environmental and social crises provide you with a very simple choice: to slip into victimhood or to rise up to leadership. In the world of business and throughout communities across the world, there has never been a better time for you to lead without a title. While those around you might be negative, this is your opportunity to grow into your most positive. While those around you sink into playing small, you can grow into expressing your best. And while so many give up on their dreams, you can reach for the stars. I know that sounds really cheesy. Yet I do believe this is a powerful truth. I totally agree. I have gone through some very hard times in my life (including near-suicidal depression), and though I would have done anything to get rid of them at the moment, now I wouldn’t trade them for the world. I wouldn’t have the strength of character and survival I have now, nor the “wisdom” I share with others today about life, had I not been pushed to the edge, many times. There’s no question that times are tough, and that they require us to gather our greatest courage, faith and optimism in the face of crisis. Do all that you can to create something positive out of all of this (if you look for it, you will find it). And as they say in 12-step groups, don’t give up before the miracle: one day you’ll turn a corner, and there it will be.
