How to Live Fearlessly in 2009

What!?  Couldn’t I pick a more realistic topic, you might ask?  That title isn’t mine, actually – it was created by Arizona’s “fearless soul” coach Carey Powell (www.fearlesscoaching.net), who invited me to be one of the seven women that she interviewed for her new “Fearless Living” Audio Series.  Last night we did a teleconference, in which we talked about the different aspects of living a fearless life.  So many people called in that the lines jammed and there were all kinds of technical difficulties – further proof that there are so many people out there right now who are terrified by what’s happening in their lives, or the world around them, and want to find a way to live fearlessly, in the midst of all.

So is it possible to maintain a fearless attitude?  Would that just be denial?

We can’t necessarily choose what’s going on around us, or in our lives, but we can choose how we receive it or deal with it.

When I woke up this morning, I actually felt worse than I have in a long time.  During the call, Carey read out a number of emails that she’d received prior to the teleseminar.  One woman had lost her husband, another had lost her house, another had lost her job, and one woman doubted that she would ever find her purpose in this lifetime.  Despite the “fearless” topic of the evening, after reflecting upon all that fear, and such sobering realities, I felt more discouraged about life than I usually do – I’m usually relentlessly optimistic, and haven’t really been letting all the hype affect me, though my own life has been affected by what’s been going on.

I’ve been so optimistic, in fact, that for extended periods I actually forget that this has affected me, too, and think of it more as a problem “out there”.  I haven’t really let it take hold inside me, and that’s a very good thing.  I said a prayer about it all this morning, and then found an email when I opened up my computer.

It was from Christine Zimmerman (the wife of inspirational business teacher Dr. Alan Zimmerman www.drzimmerman.com ) which had a quote from the Bible in it, from Colossians chapter three.   Here are some excerpted phrases from it:

“Set your sights on the realities of heaven…let heaven fill your thoughts… Do not think only about things down here on earth...”

You may not be of the same religious or spiritual orientation that I am, but chances are that you believe in God, or a “higher power”.  When we put ourselves in a spiritual frame of mind, we reach that place of peace where we know that there’s a bigger picture, that all will be well no matter what.  That as difficult it can be, and as scary as it can be, when things seem to be going out of control on this earth, we’re actually so much more than that - we’re so much more than what’s happening in our superficial earthly lives.

And that makes us safe, in the midst of it all, no matter what’s happening.  When we forget that, when we leave that place of peace, and let our minds and hearts connect again with everything that’s going on in the world, we start to get scared again.

Last night, we discussed several useful and inspirational tips that help you get out of the fear that’s weighing so many of us down, and how to be freed to live fearlessly.

My tip discussed my experience that fear, rather something to be alarmed about, rather than something that signals impending danger and doom, is usually just an indicator that we’ve stepped into the unfamiliar, that we don’t know what the outcome will be.  The unfamiliar is actually a beautiful place to be – you’re out of your comfort zone, and that means that you can make new choices and go in a new direction.  Almost always, you end up better off than you were before, even though you may have to go through tough times to get there. In the end, you’ll always find a gift in the experience – if you make the effort to look for it.

The fear is part of being human and living on this earth.  The gift that inevitably comes out of scary circumstances can be likened to a piece of heaven.  Which would you rather focus on?

No matter what’s going on, make a promise to yourself to hold your head up high, trust in the bigger picture, and don’t the fear drag you down or hold you back.
