Eight Secrets for Super-Success PDF Print E-mail

By Susan Biali, M.D.

The other day, I was lucky enough to be present when super-mogul Jerry Nelson opened up to a group about his secrets of mega-success.  Nelson, the lifelong mentor of a friend of mine (who also happens to be very successful), keeps a low profile, so you might not recognize his name.  Still, I’d bet you’d recognize some of the 44 companies he’s founded over the years.  He owns the Four Seasons Hotel at Troon North, Scottsdale, as well as the world-famous golf course of the same name.  I could go on and on, but that would leave less space for the important stuff:  his advice.

Secret # 1: Ethics

“Ethics are the most important thing in your life,” says Nelson.  “Lying, cheating, stealing…we all have the potential to catch these highly contagious viruses.”  Small breaches of ethics become comfortable, and then become a habit.  Can you be bought?

Secret # 2: Attitude

“Ten percent of life is what happens to you, but ninety percent of life is how you react, especially when things aren’t going well.” He encouraged us to admit our mistakes, to learn the lesson and then move on.  Nelson joked: “I learned to capitalize on my mistakes, and then found my capital to be almost unlimited!”

Secret # 3: Work out your differences
Nelson acquired much of his fortune through his passion for real estate, and in 11,000 real estate transactions, he never once found himself in court.  “Work out your differences with people,” he advises, “and focus on making a friend”.  I once had an uncomfortable situation in a clinic I worked in, and did my best to resolve it.  Peace was, indeed, restored – but I wonder if things could have been even better, had I made genuine friendship the goal, rather than tolerance and conflict resolution?

Secret # 4: Give it away
“It’s a law of nature,” says Nelson: “Give it away, and you get it back.  The more you give in life, the more you get.”  And he wasn’t just talking about time and money.  “Happiness, freedom, peace of mind – that’s what you should give to others.”  Can you imagine the world – or even just your workplace – if you made those your goals for everyone you came in contact with?

Secret # 5: Make a plan

“Learn to ‘P’,” he laughed.  “Plan, prioritize the planning, be persistent, and be passionate.” One of two things happens with all of us: we’re either changing for the better, or for the worse.  “Life isn’t a lottery that you suddenly win, you need to make a plan, and write it down.”  I’ve read many times about the benefits of having a plan for my day, rather than letting it just happen.  If you just take one small action a day towards your big dream, it’ll naturally materialize over time. How many days have you let drift by without taking any action towards your dreams?  How, then, do you expect to one day reach your goals?

Secret # 6: Renewal
“Renewal is all about change and growth – renew your spirit, your commitments, your goals.  Look at the long term for yourself.  No matter what it is you do, you’re your own company.”  When was the last time you took a look at yourself and your life, and evaluated what parts you like, what needs to go, what needs to change?  Before, whenever I accomplished something I considered really important or impressive, I would relax afterwards and stop pushing myself, for even a year or more afterwards – a very dangerous habit!

Secret # 7: Set tough goals

“If you don’t have a tough goal to get up for, you may as well stay at home and watch TV in bed.”  Ouch! I have a lot of typical goals: make a difference in the world, earn millions, buy a house on the ocean, look twenty when I’m eighty…Now, get a load of the kind of goals a man like Nelson sets for himself:  “In 1977, I set the goal of keeping my mind open to something that was new.  When a computer geek and his friend showed me this little box, and told me they wanted to use it to sell tickets in record stores, I remembered my goal.”  Ever heard of Ticketmaster?  Nelson was one of the founders.

Secret # 8: The greatest risk in life is not taking one
Tell yourself this the next time you find yourself longing to take a chance, but scared of the potential consequences.  “If you don’t, you’ll sit paralyzed, and soon, not taking risks becomes a habit,” warns Nelson.  “When you say in your head, heart and spirit ‘I’m going to go for it’, that’s when things happen.”

Time to pick up a pen: write out ten goals, no matter how silly or improbable.  Then, write ten big risks you’d love to take, if you were sure you couldn’t fail.  Now go for it!
