Canadian Doctor and Mexican Husband Find New Purpose Rescuing Abused Cabo Dogs For Immediate Release – As recently as a year ago, internationally recognized wellness expert Dr. Susan Biali was so afraid of dogs that she would panic when even the smallest, friendliest cocker spaniel approached her. How can it be, then, that she recently spent the night in a luxury hotel room with five untrained, boisterous Cabo street dogs? Dr. Susan Biali is best known as a media wellness expert, life coach, inspirational speaker and professional flamenco dancer. In 2004, she gave up her life in Canada and moved to Mexico to pursue her writing and dancing dreams. There, through a series of fortuitous events and strange coincidences, she and her Mexican husband, Armando Martinez, found themselves swept along by a new and totally unanticipated life purpose. What began a year ago as the innocent rescue of a seagull with a broken wing metamorphosed into these highlights of their new animal-rescue journey: befriending and taming an angry dog who had never had a human “friend”; keeping another abandoned dog company during a hurricane; transporting five Cabo rescue dogs across North America; rallying the entire community to save 20 starving and abused horses; and, finally, taking a dog that had been found nearly dead, with its mouth wired shut, and its legs tightly bound, into their home to recover his health and joy for life. Not bad, for two people who supposedly have never been particularly fond of animals.

*quoting Christine Awram, Founder, Woman of Worth Events JULY 2008 A Drug-Free Prescription for Depression A formerly depressed M.D, Dr. Susan Biali, shares her tips for recovering your happiness and mental health. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Medical doctor and internationally recognized wellness expert Dr. Susan Biali was depressed for most of her life. When she was 28, during a grueling Emergency Medicine residency, she felt so hopeless that she contemplated taking her own life. Thankfully she soon found a better way out, by taking back her life and dreams. Today, she’s a life coach, inspirational speaker, and professional salsa and flamenco dancer, and commutes between medical work in Vancouver and her life as a dancer in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The WHO predicts that by 2020, depression will be the second greatest cause of disability worldwide. A study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry estimates that close to half the population of the Western World can expect one or more episodes of depression in their lifetime. Antidepressants are the most-prescribed drug in America. What’s wrong with us, and our lives? Though some severe cases of depression may merit drug treatment, Dr. Biali believes that most people would benefit from changing the way they live, and view, their lives. Here are three simple tips from her drug-free “Prescription for Life”: 1) Get back to basics: Get enough sleep, eat well, and exercise Depressed people often have problems sleeping, have changes in appetite, and don’t feel motivated to exercise. However, if you commit to getting enough (not too much) regular sleep, eat healthy foods throughout the day (even if not hungry), and take time daily for simple exercise (even just a short walk), you’ll quickly start to feel dramatically better. 2) Depression can be a warning symptom: Ask yourself what’s wrong with your life When did your mood start to change? What was going on? What do you wish you could change about your life? Do you have a particularly difficult relationship or work environment? Are you repressing your true goals and dreams? In Dr. Biali’s personal and professional experience, you may not be the problem – it could just be your life. 3) Take small steps that honour yourself One of Dr. Biali’s first steps was signing up for a salsa dance class. Another step was leaving a very toxic relationship. What would be the next feel-good step for you? Have you always wanted to go to Disneyland? Can you call an old friend who makes you laugh? Is there something that you’ve always wanted to try doing? Try it! Susan Biali, MD is an internationally recognized wellness expert, life coach and speaker, dedicated to helping people balance their lives and live their dreams. She divides her time between Vancouver, Canada and Los Cabos, Mexico, where she performs professionally as a flamenco dancer. Dr. Biali has appeared on MSNBC and The Good Life Network, and is the medical commentator for the Canadian television program The Daily. She speaks nationally and internationally, and appears in newspaper, radio, television and internet media across North America. She has appeared in Fitness, Hello!, Chatelaine, Today’s Parent, The Medical Post and other publications, is an expert for HealthyCanada.com, and writes three different columns on nutrition, wellness and life balance for national publications. 604-872-2352 APRIL 2008 Relationship Rx: Rescuing Your Most Difficult Relationships Could Save Your Own Health & Life Challenging relationships can be hazardous to your health. Wellness expert Susan Biali, MD, has five ways to rescue your difficult relationships that will also improve your health and life. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Have you experienced anger, hostility, resentment, or all-out blaming in any of your relationships lately? Watch out – according to wellness expert and life coach Susan Biali, M.D., these relationship emotions have been linked to all kinds of health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and depressed immune system function. Luckily, Dr. Biali has five simple steps which can immediately improve the quality of your relationships and health: 1) Tend Your Own Garden - Instead of wasting time thinking about or complaining about what he or she is doing wrong, catch yourself and stop. Change your focus, immediately, to what would be the best thing you could do, right now, for yourself and your own life. 2) Learn to be Happy, No Matter What They Do - If your happiness depends on the actions of another person, you (and they) are going to be miserable. Find, or create, things about your life that you enjoy, and focus on them when things get tough. 3) Listen to Your Body - Hostility and resentment can hurt you more than they do the other person. Learn to recognize signs of tension in your body: stomach pains, neck or back pain, headaches. At the first sign, do something that helps you immediately feel better (attacking the other person does not count!). 4) Own Your Own Buttons- If someone knows just what to do or say to set you off, don’t blame them. You can’t control them, but can control your reaction. Notice yourself as you react and interrupt it: e.g. take a time-out; leave the room; do something silly. 5) Focus on What’s Good - Focus on what you like about the other person, and what you could or should improve in your own life. When you focus on the good things, the change in you will often cause the other person to miraculously improve on their own.
