I have always had a hard time with boundaries. For whatever reason, it’s
hard for me to ask for what I need, and it’s hard for me to say no.

At my most recent all-day retreat for women, I spoke on everything from creativity to hormones,
and the topic that provoked the most intense discussion was that of
establishing your life’s purpose. This subject has fascinated me since I
walked away from Emergency Medicine and began the journey that led me
to a very different, purpose-driven life.

My great passion is showing people how surprisingly easy it can be to
create a fulfilling life they deeply love. You don’t necessarily have to
make radical, risky changes to have a much richer, joyful experience of
life, but you do have to take the steps that move you forward into new
ways of doing things.

“I can’t control what I eat,” said my new coaching
client, a busy working mom with two active young boys. “I’ve been like
this my whole adult life. When it comes to food, I turn into a raving
fat, salt and sugar fiend. I just can’t stop. I’m ashamed to even tell
you where I buy dinner most nights.”

As a doctor and dietitian it drives me crazy when people search for easy
(and typically useless) solutions to complex problems. “Take this
dubious potion and lose twenty pounds in a week” – you know what I’m
talking about. People waste their money and time on these schemes, and
often end up worse off than when they started. That said, as a
coach I get really excited when I discover a simple and relatively
effortless tool that quickly and profoundly improves a person’s life.

It’s natural: when you see someone doing something you long to do, you automatically search for reasons to justify why they’re doing it and you’re not.
Maybe they had encouraging supportive parents and yours belittled you. Maybe they got their start at a younger age and it’s probably too late for you now. Maybe they got a great education, or were blessed with more opportunities in life.

I work with my coaching clients by phone or Skype. Without visual distractions such as appearance or facial expression, I can listen really closely to tones and inflections of voice. As they tell me about themselves, often sharing things they haven’t told anyone else, I quite quickly get a feel for who a person is.
And I immediately notice when something they say doesn’t fit.

A few weeks ago I was brought in to speak to the staff of a local university. I gave a two hour workshop, which is even more fun for me than giving a keynote as I get to interact personally with the audience and draw their stories out.
One of the sections of the workshop was about listening to your body. Every person’s body “speaks” to them in a different way; it’s important to pay attention to and learn to understand and interpret your body’s language.

Though I enjoy reading leadership expert Michael Hyatt’s blog, a recent post titled What the Internet is Doing to Our Brains (and What We Can Do About It)
scared me more than anything I’ve read in a long time. It wasn’t his
post so much actually, as the article which had inspired it—a piece by
Tony Dokoupil in Newsweek called Is the Web Driving Us Mad? Apparently it is.

As mentioned in the first two articles I've written on this topic, I'm excited and honored to be partnering with Embassy Suites Hotels this summer (have you and your family ever stayed in one? they were a family favorite when I was growing up). As you know I'm all about maximizing health and happiness by finding time for family, friends and fun, so I'm really thrilled to be contributing to their summer Vacation "More-imization" campaign. North Americans in general are severely starved for vacations and down time, more than any other people in the world, and our productivity, success, health and happiness suffer as a result.
