Your Best You

I had a wake-up call this week. Not the worst kind, like a critical illness or death, but a shake-up wake-up nonetheless. I'm in the middle of a busy book tour (my book, Live a Life You Love, came out in March), but the events of last week suddenly froze time. It felt like when your heart skips a beat, pauses for a scary moment that you breathlessly feel all the way up into your neck, then heaves back into action with a huge thud against your chest wall.

After I gave a workshop based on my book, Life a Life You Love: 7 Steps to a Healthier, Happier, More Passionate You, a participant sent me this anonymous comment, in response to the first step in the workshop, "Allow Yourself to be You":

"I would love to learn how to allow myself to be myself - but what does that mean and how do you do this?"

When you were a child, what did you love to do most?  What were you going to be, when you grew up?  These are always the first questions I ask, when I give my workshop based on the steps of my book, Live a Life You Love: 7 Steps to a Healthier, Happier, More Passionate You (hint: Step One is “Allow Yourself to be You” – the real you, not the you that the world expects you to be).   This weekend when I gave the workshop at a women’s event, one participant remembered – with some surprise - that when she was little, she couldn’t stop tap dancing.

Health and Nutrition

Nutrition fascinates me - I've been studying it for over twenty years and have a university degree in Dietetics. These days I'm particularly interested in the secrets of high-performance eating; the busier and bigger my life gets, the more I need to be on the ball. Food is an essential part of my success strategy. Put another way: if I didn't know how to eat right for my brain, I'd be a mess.

Silence the Voice That Wants to Shut You Down Print E-mail
Success and Motivation

Today I was talking to a young friend, a brilliant writer whose future is so bright it blinds me. She had just finished reading my new book, Live a Life You Love, and expressed concern that her book might not be as meaningful to people. "When I read your book," she said, "you had so many stories about different challenges you faced and difficult experiences you went through. As I was reading, I kept hearing a voice inside that told me that I haven't lived enough yet to be a real writer, to really be able to help people".

At first I was floored. Where would she get this idea? She has accomplished things that I hadn't even thought to dream of when I was her age, and her writing is so alive, rich, and full of insight. After reflecting on this for a moment, I laughed and told her that the same thing's happening to me.

Reflections
Written by Dr. Susan Biali

I’m in Mexico right now, alone on a “working holiday”. I’m preparing for the launch of my book, Live a Life You Love, and resting and reflecting on life. I used to travel by myself all the time when I was single, to get away from the craziness and drudgery of the medical clinic and fly away into a kind of life, however brief, that felt more like me and gave me hope for a better, more passionate future. It amazes me to look back and see all that emerged as a result of those solo trips. My flamenco dance company in Mexico, the dance moves I learned in Spain, the stories now published in my book, my beautiful Mexican husband, the different languages I speak – all of these I discovered, absorbed or created through those adventures that I almost obsessively threw myself into, one after the other.

How to Maintain Your Waistline & Your Sanity This Season Print E-mail
Your Best Life

Most people have a love-hate relationship with the Christmas season – we love the Christmas spirit and the family, friends, fun and festivities, but as the pace picks up we get overwhelmed both physically and financially. We end up with too much on our plates, both literally and figuratively! I’ve had to examine my holiday choices more than usual this year, first because of unusually high time demands in my business, and second because my weight has started to creep up (when I’m really happy I eat more and put on weight – an unfortunate combination!).

Here are some things that I’ve been doing to keep things in check, with great results so far – I’m sure that they will help you, too:

Tired of Living a Limited Life? Learn To Think Big Print E-mail
Live Your Dreams
Written by Dr. Susan Biali
Monday, 28 September 2009

I just got home from a meeting with a friend who's a fellow medical doctor and speaker. We happily brainstormed ideas for an event that we're putting together, until suddenly everything shifted.

This shift began when I said "We have to give them an experience that will be memorable."

"That's it!" my friend exclaimed. "We have to give them an experience that's guaranteed to change their lives forever."

Now we were excited. Now we had a vision. Now - we were finally thinking big. Our focus and energy shifted from conceiving something good to creating something great. When you have that kind of energy behind a project, idea, or dream, it changes everything, exploding your possibilities and dramatically increasing your probability of success.

I recently spoke at a conference and received Michael Port's book, The Think Big Manifesto (www.thinkbigrevolution.com ), as a thank you gift. I finished it in one day. I was so impressed that I asked Michael if I could share some excerpts with you.

Three Secrets for Building Happier, More Meaningful Relationships Print E-mail
Your Best Life

I frequently talk about relationships as one of the most important contributors to your health and happiness. And it's not just your closest relationships - the number of social contacts you have in your daily life, period (including the bank teller and your neighbor down the street) are directly associated with your well-being.  Last week at church, the sermon was about three elements that are required to create a better relationship with the divine. Listening, I realized it was good advice about creating a better relationship with anyone who is important to you.

Eat Yourself Happy: Choose Foods that Boost Mood and Vitality Print E-mail
Health and Nutrition

I have a history of depression, though thankfully I haven't had an episode in almost ten years. I turned my mood around by making major changes in my personal and professional life, and will tell you more about that in another post.

I'm a practicing medical doctor (GP) with a degree in Dietetics, and am fascinated by the potential for certain foods and simple wellness practices to prevent and treat major medical conditions or diseases. I've written for years about the ability of food to protect and boost your mood, though in some cases of depression anti-depressant medications might still be necessary. That said, understanding the relationship between food and mood can help increase the effectiveness of anti-depressant medications, and may also help prevent relapse.

I protect myself from recurrent depression and deliberately "feed" my daily mood by following the following dietary rules for a good mood:
